Executive Committee

LERN is run by a Committee of volunteers:

President- Carina Kern

Carina is currently completing her PhD at the Institute of Healthy Ageing, UCL and is working on understanding ageing disease mechanisms through genetics and evolutionary biology. Her previous work focused on modelling energy transfer and light-harvesting in plants using quantum chemistry and theoretical physics.  She is also Scientific Chair of the global CleanTech Challenge for student startups combining business and clean technology solutions.

Vice President- Miranda Dyson

Miranda is studying for a PhD at the VIB in Leuven, Belgium developing novel ways to detect programmed cell death in neurodegenerative diseases in the fruit fly.  She previously worked as a Research Technician in the Dementia Research Institute, UCL studying genetic modifiers of C9orf72 ALS, also in the fruit fly.

Secretary- Neina Motoki

Neina is a studying for a Master’s in the department of Genetics, Evolution and Environment, UCL. She is currently working on a project using the C9orf72 repeat expansion Drosophila models of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and frontotemporal dementia. She previously worked on investigating soil microbiome diversity by metagenomic analysis.

Events Officer- Gino Brignoli

Gino is studying for a London NERC DTP funded PhD in the department of Genetics, Evolution and Environment at UCL and ZSL Institute of Zoology. His research considers how changes in bird trait diversity and composition alter ecosystem function in human-impacted afromontane sky islands.

Publicity Officer- Sam Morris

Sam is a BBSRC funded PhD student at the UCL Genetics Institute. His research involves developing and applying new methods to analyse ancient DNA from humans and other species, in order to better understand their evolutionary and demographic histories.

If you would like to become involved with LERN, please get in touch. We are always looking for more volunteers to join the team!
